You don’t owe anyone a follow on social media

Lately, I’ve been thinking about social media and its effect on my mental health, so here is a short ranting post.

The other day I was going through my Instagram stories and I saw a story that made me sad. And I thought to myself, “Why am I following this account? It’s not doing me any good. It just makes me unhappy.” That’s when I came to this realization. I can choose who I follow and don’t follow

The truth is you don’t owe anyone a follow on social media. If someone’s account makes you feel bad about yourself or if it makes you jealous of them, you should unfollow. If it’s causing you to think poorly of that person, unfollow. Social media is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be a way for us to stay in touch with our friends and family. I love Instagram. It’s very fun to me, and I don’t think I’ll be signing off anytime soon. I will; however, not be afraid to unfollow any accounts that don’t make me feel good, and you shouldn’t be either!

  1. Yes, i totally agree with you when you say that if an account makes feel us not so good, we should unfollow it because we need postivie things in our lives. Oh I like instagram too of course, my favorite social right now. – Paolo

  2. Social networks greatly influence mental health and for this reason they should not be taken lightly, even if you use them for work as well as for pleasure you have to create a certain distance from them by not depending on them.

  3. Yes! We have to protect our energy and our space especially on social media. Make sure to only consume content that you’re truly interested in and will bring positive effect in your life.

  4. I have been doing this a lot lately. Going through all my social media platforms and removing accounts that are no longer servicing me. I found that I was only following a person for maybe 1 or 2 posts that I saw from them that I liked. That is not enough to keep me as a follower.

  5. this. is. powerful. I came to this realization a long time ago and unfollowed majority of my friends list and then went back in and followed the ones I missed the most so that I could stay up to date. If I want to check in on someone I can easily just look them up as we are still friends / family and connected on social media it’s just not affecting my vibe in my feed in ways I do not want.

  6. Social media has become such a forced thing these days. As if you have to have to do it kind. But I always like to be restrictive with it. Not follow accounts just because everyone does.
